This first semester for me as a phd student has passed quickly. This semester is of great significance to me. The first task I set for myself is to adapt to the school environment and daily life in the US, and on the basis of adaptation, I began to explore my own research direction. Looking back on this journey at the end of the semester, I think I have basically achieved this goal and adapted well to the new environment. In terms of academics, my research interests are mainly focused on civic education and gender equality education. These fields are of great significance to social development and educational equity. Through this semester's study and communication with my supervisor, I am more convinced that my research direction is not only of theoretical value, but also has a profound impact on educational practice. At the suggestion of my supervisor, I took three courses this semester, mainly focusing on curriculum theory and research methods. These courses laid ...

I signed up for the Diwali Paint Night event at the Purdue Graduate Student Center during mental health week. When I signed up, I only saw the word "paint". Although I didn't quite understand what the word "diwali" meant, I thought it was probably about painting something. So when I arrived at the event and saw three small ceramic bowls on the table, I thought they were used to hold materials. It wasn't until the Indian girl next to me started painting the small bowls that I realized: Wait, am I going to paint materials on this clay bowl! ? I checked on the website. Diwali is the most popular traditional festival. In order to welcome the godness Lakshmi, Indian people will decorate their houses with bright colors. Lakshmi is the goddess of happiness and wealth, two of my favorite things, haha. I was so lucky to participate in this event by accident. Godness Lakshmi Two hours passed quickly. While I was concentrating o...

The selection of journals is a crucial step for a potential researcher. It’s essential for researchers to access the latest trends in their research field, as time limited and every minute counts. Therefore, to locate the right journals, I set some regulations before searching. First, the recommendation journal list I got from my advisor. Second, the journals which publish articles relevant to my research field. My core research field is civic education so that’s my research key words. Third, I will check the impact factor according to the instructions on Brightspace, of course, the higher the better. Through the three regulations, I find 3 journals which I think will be very helpful for my future research. Here are my journal lists: 1)Journal of School Choice The journal was first published in 2006 by Routledge, Taylor & Francis, and has 4 issues every year. The 2023IF of this journal was 1.44, and 2023JIF was 0.443. The journ...

The importance of sleep to people is self-evident. But now, we have many important things, such as making progress in research, succeeding in our careers, and even maintaining friendships. Getting enough sleep has become a luxury, even though we know the importance of sleep. In general, we all know that without sleep, we will be confused, lack experience, and cannot complete work efficiently. So, I would like to introduce some other interesting facts about sleep in this workshop. First of all, lack of sleep may cause obesity ! Okay, this statement is indeed a bit alarmist. But sleep does play a vital role in regulating metabolism and hunger signals. When we don't get enough sleep, the balance of hormones that control hunger and satiety is disrupted. This often leads to overeating or craving unhealthy, high-calorie foods. Over time, lack of sleep can lead to weight gain and metabolic disorders such as diabetes. Ha...

Hi, welcome to Jiayi's blog again! Currently, I am in the Social Education Program . I believe that education is an important part of our social culture. Social culture influences our education system, and cultivated individuals through our education system shape our future society. Our society is a complex machine without a manual. The mutual influence between education and society is invisible but fascinating. My current research interest is civic education . This selection of research field is started from my childhood with my grandmother. My grandmother is a JH school math teacher and has a great influence on my life choices. When I was young, she encouraged me to actively participate in her class(just me and her), such as discussing to buy which kind of blackboard and chalk together, selecting teaching methods, etc., which gave me a great sense of pride. However, I found that these behaviors of mine could not be carried out in ordinary schools and would not be encourag...

Hello everyone, my name is Jiayi Fang from China. I am a first-year Ph.D. student in the Social Studies Education program at Purdue University. This is a new chapter in my life, and I'd like to share a bit about my journey so far. I earned my bachelor's degree from Ocean University of China, where I majored in Tourism Management. After graduating from OUC, I shifted my focus to education. I was raised by my dear grandma, who was a junior high school math teacher. I've always wanted to become a teacher, and I was fortunate enough to earn my graduate degree from Hiroshima University in Japan. With my advisor, Dr. Ishida(The lady dressed in yellow top, a very wise and elegant woman), me(The one dressed in red striped top)and my fellow students under same advisor in Hiroshima University, Japan. However, during my time in Japan, the COVID-19 came. Although I graduated successfully, I struggled to find a job. Determined, I applied to every position that matched my qualifications...
