Hello everyone, I am Jiayi😄

Hello everyone, my name is Jiayi Fang from China. I am a first-year Ph.D. student in the Social Studies Education program at Purdue University. This is a new chapter in my life, and I'd like to share a bit about my journey so far.

I earned my bachelor's degree from Ocean University of China, where I majored in Tourism Management. After graduating from OUC, I shifted my focus to education. I was raised by my dear grandma, who was a junior high school math teacher. I've always wanted to become a teacher, and I was fortunate enough to earn my graduate degree from Hiroshima University in Japan.

With my advisor, Dr. Ishida(The lady dressed in yellow top, a very wise and elegant woman),  me(The one dressed in red striped top)and my fellow students under same advisor in Hiroshima University, Japan.

However, during my time in Japan, the COVID-19 came. Although I graduated successfully, I struggled to find a job. Determined, I applied to every position that matched my qualifications. After three months of job hunting, my luck turned around! At a recruitment fair, I handed my resume to a local college without expecting much, and to my surprise, they accepted me! I started working in its Education Department.

This is the beginning of my career as an academic coordinator and part-time college teacher at Chengdu College of Arts and Sciences. After a year, I transitioned to Geely University of China, where I became a full-time teacher.

(During the lockdown period of COVID-19, we had online courses with students)

I truly enjoy sharing my ideas with students and engaging with them in meaningful discussions. Moreover, I I developed a deep passion for education and felt that I could, and should, contribute to this field.

Course list:
2024 Spring  Spcial Education/ Microteaching
2023 Fall      Classroom Organization and Management
2023 Spring  Teachers’ Speaking Skills
2022 Fall       Historical Foreign Education

During my last teaching position, I was assigned to different courses, which was challenging but also fruitful. Each course gave me a new perspective on the field of education, and I was so happy to receive positive feedback from my students. It was especially satisfying to read comments like, "Miss Fang has a great sense of humor, and I learned a lot from this course!" on MyGeely(like the Brightspace of Purdue).

While I've taught many different subjects, my core research interests are in civic education and gender equality in education. I believe the curriculum has a deep connection with society and history, and it shapes what kind of students we want to develop. Additionaly, as a woman and a proud feminist, I'm passionate about addressing gender inequalities problems in education.

This is a simple depiction of my most recent teaching role.

Now, in 2024, I've come to Purdue to continue exploring the field of education.

What an exciting experience it will be---I am looking forward to it!

Oh, and one more thing—did you know I can do Chinese fortune-telling? If you're interested, feel free to contact me!

I’m especially impressed by how you’ve adapted and thrived across diverse educational settings.

I admire your research interests. I hope that you have also planned to explore how civic education can actively promote gender equality. Bridging these areas could lead to a comprehensive approach that empowers students to engage thoughtfully with social issues.
